Second articel was printed about the work done in the school. I hope you can reach it by this link. I translated, it comes here.
It was a cultural shock
„We have to show our faith, this possible not only by words, but also by our deeds, like when we work for others” – summarized the essence of volunteer work the leader of the Dutch group working in Zabola for five days, called Henry Dorgelo, pastor of the Protestant Church in Gramsbergen, Holland.
In Holland volunteer work has great tradition, that’s why we like to visit other countries also to make this movement popular, and to get known to people, cultures through volunteer work. On this way we get very precious contacts and experiences.” – told the pastor.
The Dutch volunteers – nine schoolgirls and three adult attendant – got in touch with Zabola through the Foundation Vrienden Over Grenzen (friends over the borders). The leader of the group, Arie Noorlander knows already very well this region, because they have a contact with the pastor-couple Beke for about 5-6 years. Since then they visited several times the village of the Mikes family, they helped the renovation of the church in this village, of the guesthouse of the parochy, and they gave special help for some families in the village, and they started up a doctor’s post in the village.
They wanted to do something special this time also, that’s why they decided that for the two week’s accommodation they leave something durable gift for the village. So together with eight girls from the village they renovated the Elementary School of Zabola. They spent five days of their holiday to make the school nicer. They repainted all the windows and doors of the school, and they cleaned the whole building. And for all this work they themselves bought all the tools needed! The girls didn’t do all this at the costs of their own parents, one year ago they started to work, and to spare money for this work trip in Romania.
For me Zabola and all this region is not new, because I come here two times a year – said Arie Noorlander. But for the girls it was a real cultural shock to see and experience all this, and they fell is love with the Hungarian gastronomy. But apart from this we will not come next year because we will receive the Hungarian girls. The only difference will be that we can not offer them such a nice work – told with a smile the Dutch group-leader.
